Gauff Wins 6-3, 6-4; Keys and Fritz Advance

The U.S. Open, tennis’s final Grand Slam, saw Coco Gauff beat Zeynep Sonmez 6-3, 6-4 in Tuesday’s first round. Gauff hit five aces and saved four of five break points, preserving her chance to finish the tournament ranked No. 1. Americans Madison Keys and Taylor Fritz also advanced in straight sets, while No. 12 Belinda Bencic was upset. Gauff next faces the winner of Paula Badosa and Daria Kasatkina.

For Wednesday’s U.S. Open matches, Kalshi prices Paula Badosa at 90% over Daria Kasatkina at 10% after a 35-point overnight swing.

Cardinals Hammer Five Homers, Beat Dodgers 13-8

Major League Baseball’s St. Louis Cardinals hit five home runs to open their series against Los Angeles with a 13-8 victory. Thomas Saggese homered twice, and Dodgers starter Eric Lauer allowed seven runs in three innings. St. Louis entered Tuesday 4½ games outside the final National League wild-card spot, giving the upset postseason significance. The teams meet again Wednesday at 10:10 p.m. ET.

For the next Cardinals–Dodgers game, Kalshi still favors Los Angeles at 63%, compared with St. Louis at 38%.

Insurer Uses Kalshi to Cover $3 Million Kiffin Bonus

College football’s LSU Tigers are at the center of an unusual insurance hedge covering coach Lane Kiffin’s postseason bonuses. An unidentified third-party insurer bought five Kalshi positions that could pay a combined $3 million if LSU wins the national championship, matching Kiffin’s maximum playoff bonus. The firm spent about $662,000 on contracts covering successive postseason milestones. It completed the trades in 72 seconds. The arrangement shows how prediction markets can offset institutional sports liabilities rather than simply facilitate fan bets.

House Passes Stopgap Funding Bill 370-48

The U.S. government funding fight eased after the House approved legislation keeping agencies open into early December. The measure passed 370-48 after clearing the Senate and now goes to President Donald Trump for his signature. Congress faced a September 30 deadline and wanted to avoid a shutdown confrontation while members campaigned for the November midterms. The next major spending fight is now likely to come after Election Day.

After the stopgap bill passed 370-48, the YND DC Dysfunction index—our measure of government-shutdown odds—sits at 4.5%. Traders had assigned little risk to a pre-election closure.

U.S. Strikes Iran; Tehran Fires Missiles Across Region

The conflict between the United States and Iran escalated after American forces struck Iranian military targets and Tehran retaliated with missiles and drones. U.S. Central Command said it hit air defenses, radar systems, maritime assets and communications facilities. Iranian officials said a strike on a wedding gathering killed five people and wounded at least 68. Jordan said it intercepted 10 of 13 incoming missiles. Attention now turns to whether another exchange follows after Trump threatened substantially heavier attacks.

The regional escalation has pushed the chance of the Israel–Iran ceasefire holding through September 30 down 5 points to 82%. A U.S. invasion of Iran before 2027 is priced at 15%, while Strait of Hormuz traffic returning to normal by September 30 stands at 2.5%.

Fed’s Barr Backs Hike If Inflation Stays Hot

The Federal Reserve’s September policy decision is in focus after Michael Barr said the central bank should raise interest rates if inflation does not cool sufficiently. Barr called inflation too high and identified the September 15-16 meeting as the next decision point. He described employment as stable and the broader economy as solid. The benchmark rate currently sits between 3.50% and 3.75%, and several officials have signaled openness to another increase. Incoming inflation and employment reports will help determine whether the Fed acts this month or waits.

Barr’s comments reinforce the direction of current pricing. Polymarket puts a 25-bps September hike at 59% and a rate hike sometime in 2026 at 71%.

Israel–Iran ceasefire holds through Sept 30 — 82% (−5)

Polymarket · $219K traded

The Israel–Iran ceasefire market covers whether the truce survives through September 30, and its price slipped to 82% (−5) over the past day. The move followed new strikes by American forces and Iranian retaliation with missiles and drones. A separate contract on the US invading Iran before 2027 sits at 15%. Traders still favor the ceasefire holding, but the latest military exchange added a concrete reason for concern.

Bitcoin dips to $45K by year-end — 10% (+2)

Polymarket · $184K traded

With spot at $78,157 in our engine’s crypto feed, the contract requires a 42% drawdown. The YND Bitcoin $100K index puts a run to six figures at 6.5%, so traders currently price the one-in-ten crash scenario above the rally.

Nobody should be 17% to win the Super Bowl in Week 1

The NFL season is just kicking off, and Kalshi’s championship market already has a runaway favorite. The playoff math says slow down.

The 2026–27 NFL championship market has installed the Los Angeles Rams as a clear Super Bowl favorite before the schedule has meaningfully started. Kalshi prices them at 17% (+1), with 116,690 contracts traded in 24 hours and 5.3M contracts of open interest. The next tier is far behind: Baltimore stands at 7%, and Denver is at 5%. The contract resolves Feb 13, after an entire regular season and full playoff bracket.

A 17% title price requires several favorable outcomes in sequence. The Rams must make the playoffs, stay healthy and then win three or four straight postseason games. Even generous assumptions leave little margin. Give the Rams a 75% chance to reach the playoffs and a 60% chance in each playoff game with a bye, and 0.75 × 0.60³ lands at roughly 16%. That nearly matches the current price under near-best-case conditions. One injury or slow start would weaken the calculation quickly. Our fair range is 10–13%. The strongest counterargument is the ten-point gap to Baltimore, which shows bettors see a genuine class above the field. The 5.3M open contracts also make this a substantial market rather than a casual early-season quote. We are wrong if the Rams stack wins and the contract climbs through 20% instead of moving back toward the pack.

Bottom line: NO on the Rams for the title at 83%. The contract resolves Feb 13, and every Sunday before then creates another way for the championship path to fail.

CHICAGO (MIDWAY) HIGH >94° ON SEP 1 — NO · NO @ 54% · KALSHI · Settles tomorrow

Chicago weather: NWS forecast the Midway high at 92°, while this bracket needs 95°+. That requires a 3° forecast miss, yet YES still trades at 46%.

BRAVES @ NATIONALS — ATLANTA WIN · YES @ 59% · KALSHI · Today 1:05pm ET

Major League Baseball: Kalshi prices Atlanta at 59% against Washington, up +3 on the day across 98K contracts. No book check was measured on today's slate, so this is a price read rather than a gap play.

NYC (CENTRAL PARK) HIGH <83° ON SEP 1 — NO · NO @ 48% · KALSHI · Settles tomorrow

New York City weather: NWS forecast Central Park at exactly 83°, while the bracket pays only at 82° or lower. At 52% YES, traders make an outcome below the forecast more likely than not.

Track record: 6 open calls, graded no graded calls yet so far. Grading is automatic when markets resolve; wins and misses both stay published.

BIG BET omoi0i0 $157K Will Novak Djokovic win the 2026 Men’s US Open? NO @ 95.4% Men’s US Open: omoi0i0 bet Sunday night that Novak Djokovic would NOT win the tournament. The position risks $157K to earn about $7K, making its scale more notable than its return.
HEAVY VOLUME September Fed decision 3.7M contracts Fed Decision in September? HIKE 25BPS @ 62% The Federal Reserve’s September rate decision drew 3.7M Kalshi contracts across four outcomes in one day. A quarter-point hike is priced at 62% (+5), while a hold stands at 38%.
BIG BET Weaseloftheweek $146K MLB: San Diego Padres @ Cincinnati Reds PADRES @ 56% Took San Diego at 56% minutes before Tuesday evening’s first pitch — each $1 staked returns ~$1.79 if the Padres won.

07 The Longshot

The market gives George Clooney one-in-a-thousand odds of being the Democratic nominee

The 2028 Democratic presidential nomination market prices an Oscar winner who has never run for office at 0.1%, with $2.8M sitting in the order book.

The 2028 Democratic presidential nomination market includes George Clooney, an actor and director who has held zero elected offices. His contract trades at 0.1% (−0.1), making the outcome a foregone conclusion rather than a serious political forecast. The money is the only notable feature: $266K traded in the last 24 hours, and $2.8M of liquidity remains in a contract that does not settle for another 796 days.

For George Clooney to win, he would need to enter the presidential primary and defeat the entire Democratic field. His political résumé consists of fundraisers and op-eds, while the same event board prices Senator John Fetterman, an actual sitting officeholder, at just 0.4%. YES buyers are purchasing a 1,000-to-1 lottery ticket. NO sellers must lock up capital for more than two years to collect a fraction of a point. Near zero is the defensible price; a quarter-million dollars a day changing hands is entertainment, not evidence of a viable candidacy. ↗
