Ohio Says Kalshi Is Illegal Gambling; UK Urged to Act on Bank-Failure Markets

Two regulatory headlines landed on the venues themselves. The Statehouse News Bureau reports Governor DeWine says Kalshi is illegal gambling and Ohio will enforce state law following a ruling. Separately, The Guardian reports the UK is being urged to act as Polymarket takes bets on whether HSBC and Lloyds will fail.

Neither story has a contract that settles on it. The nearest proxy for how much Ohio bettors have at stake today is Kalshi’s Ohio St.–Iowa game, with Ohio St. at 85% and 369,398 contracts traded.

POLITICS

A $151K Bet Against a Democratic Sweep, One Month From Election Day

The midterm markets, which settle November 3, saw their largest single trade of the day go against the favorite. On Friday evening the account lomneivan bought $151K of NO at 36% on Polymarket’s “D Senate, D House” contract, a bet that Democrats fall short in at least one chamber. The House side of that question is not where the doubt lives: Democrats controlling the House after the midterms is priced at 94% (+1).

Polymarket prices Republicans holding both the Senate and the House at 7%, and Democrats taking both chambers at 63%.

Markets Lean Toward an October Fed Pause, With December Back in Play

Reuters reports the Federal Reserve may skip a hike at its October 28 meeting but pull the trigger in December, and The Economic Times says Fed officials have been dropping hints as markets cut October hike odds. The prices moved accordingly over 24 hours: the hold leg rose (+8) and the 25-basis-point hike leg fell (−8). The September consumer-price report, which Kalshi’s inflation brackets settle on Oct. 14, is the next scheduled test before the meeting.

Kalshi prices the Fed holding rates in October at 82%; Polymarket’s mirror of the same decision sits at 83%. A 25-basis-point hike is down to 19% on Kalshi, while a December hike is priced at 71%.

Four Division Series Games Crowd Today’s Baseball Board

Major League Baseball’s Division Series fill four of the busiest slots on Kalshi’s game board today: Chicago White Sox–Cleveland, San Diego–Milwaukee, Dodgers–Atlanta and Yankees–Tampa Bay. Sports Illustrated has run through Kalshi’s World Series market for every team entering the round. The White Sox–Cleveland game is the busiest of the four at 481,422 contracts, 334,420 of them in the last 24 hours.

Kalshi has the Dodgers at 68% to beat Atlanta today. The Yankees are underdogs at 45%, with Tampa Bay at 56%.

Polymarket’s Kyiv Strike Markets Draw Scrutiny Over Thin Volume

Yellow.com reports that Polymarket’s bets on strikes on Kyiv show $124,000 in volume, but that two trades explain most of it. It is a useful reminder about the war’s markets generally: a headline volume figure can be a handful of accounts rather than a crowd, and the Russia-related contracts that do carry size are the long-dated ones.

Polymarket’s contract on Vladimir Putin leaving office by year-end sits at 2.3%, and that question is about who runs Russia, not whether the war slows down.

03 Biggest Movers

Indiana enacts a data center moratorium by end of 2027 — 14% (−14)

Polymarket · $1.9M traded

A Polymarket contract on whether Indiana passes a law pausing new data center construction by the end of 2027 lost half its value in a day. Related contracts fell with it: Texas by 2027 is at 16% (−14), and Indiana by 2028 is at 23% (−16). No public catalyst explains the move. One account bought $1.1M of NO on Friday night at 74%, when YES was trading near 26%. A bill advancing in either statehouse would reverse all three.

September inflation above 3.8% — 15% (+13)

Kalshi · 17K contracts

Kalshi asks whether September’s consumer-price inflation, due Oct. 14, will come in above 3.8% year over year. That was a 2% question yesterday and is 15% today, and the 3.7% threshold rose to 18% (+6). The middle of the range barely moved: above 3.6% is 43% and above 3.5% is 82%. What grew, in other words, is the chance of an uncomfortably hot number. A hotter print would support a December Fed hike, which is already priced at 71%.

Anthropic announces bankruptcy by end of 2027 — 10% (+5)

Polymarket · $855K traded

A Polymarket contract on whether Anthropic, the AI company behind the Claude models, announces bankruptcy before 2028 doubled from 5% to 10%, on $855K traded in 24 hours. One in ten is not a rounding error. The question is narrow: it resolves on an announced bankruptcy, not on a bad year, and the window runs 454 days. A financing headline in either direction is what would move it next.

The jobs-report ladder has a rung out of place.

Kalshi’s October payrolls brackets disagree with their own arithmetic, and the odd one out is priced at 70%.

Kalshi’s October jobs-report markets settle on the Bureau of Labor Statistics release at 8:29am ET on Friday, Nov. 6, 34 days from now. “Above 30,000 jobs” is 68% (+1). “Above 70,000” is 38% (−50) in 24 hours, on 10,515 contracts. “Above 90,000” is 70% (+34), on 1,064 contracts, every one of them traded in the last day. A print above 90,000 is also a print above 70,000, so the third number cannot legitimately sit above the second. Right now it sits 32 points above it.

The backdrop is a Fed that markets now expect to sit still. Reuters frames October as a likely skip with a December hike still on the table, and The Economic Times reports markets cutting October hike odds. Kalshi’s own ladder agrees: the October hold leg is 82% (+8), a 25-basis-point October hike is 19% (−8), and a December hike is 71%. The payrolls brackets moved violently inside that same day, and the 90,000 rung moved the wrong way.

Then the arithmetic. More than 90,000 jobs is always also more than 70,000, so the 90,000 bracket cannot be worth more than the 70,000 bracket’s 38%. Our own model, a random walk with drift from the latest official print, centers October near +41,000, which, by our estimate, leaves 90,000 short of a coin flip. NO costs 30%.

The case against: 1,064 contracts is a market almost nobody has traded, and a displayed 70% may be one stray fill — a single trade at an odd price — rather than a price anyone will still offer you. We’re wrong if the October report prints above 90,000, and losing shares pay nothing. Before then, watch September inflation on Oct. 14 and the Fed on Oct. 28.

Bottom line: NO on “above 90,000 jobs” in the October report at 30% — settles Nov. 6, 34 days out, on Kalshi.

College football, Saturday’s most-traded game: 785,542 contracts, 400,617 of them in the last 24 hours. Alabama drifted to 66% (−1), with Mississippi St. at 34%. Alabama is also 12% to win the SEC; Georgia is 34%.

Tomorrow

NFL: tomorrow’s Raiders–Chiefs game has already drawn 2,062,180 contracts, more than any game today. Kansas City is 66% to win outright. Whether the Chiefs win by more than 4.5 points is priced at 50%, and whether the teams combine for more than 47.5 points is also 50%.

06 Biggest Trades

The biggest individual trades of the last 24 hours — who put money down, how much, and how it went.

BIG BET aenews2 $1.1M Indiana: data center moratorium enacted by end of 2027 · Polymarket NO @ 74% Late Friday this account bought $1.1M of NO at 74%. Each dollar pays about $1.35 if Indiana passes no moratorium before 2028.
BIG BET lomneivan $151K Midterms: Democratic Senate and Democratic House · Polymarket NO @ 36% On Friday this account bought $151K of NO at 36%, betting against Democrats winning both chambers in November. Each dollar pays $2.78 if they fall short in either one.

Thursday’s trading on Polymarket’s Steelers vs. Browns market drew big money on both sides. About $550K bought the Steelers at 58–76% that evening. Meanwhile teslaRoadster, who had bought the Browns at 43% that morning, sold $445K of Browns at 99.9% before midnight. The market is not yet marked settled.

07 The Longshot

Putin out of office by New Year’s is priced at 2.3%. $319K traded on it in a day.

Eighty-nine days, no scheduled exit, and a market that still turns over a third of a million dollars daily.

Vladimir Putin is President of Russia, and a Polymarket contract asks whether he will be out of that job by December 31, 2026. YES is priced at 2.3% (−0.5) over 24 hours, on $319K traded in the last day against $867K of liquidity. For comparison, the same venue puts a U.S. invasion of Iran before 2027 at 17%.

What has to happen: the contract asks only whether he is out of office by December 31, not how. A ceasefire, a succession rumor, or a health scare counts for nothing unless it ends with someone else in the job. Our read: at 2.3% with 89 days left, the half-point drift looks like the ordinary cost of another day passing, and the price is information about the calendar and entertainment about the Kremlin. Heavy trading is not evidence that anyone knows something. A NO share bought near 98% still puts the full purchase price at risk. ↗
