What happened in the last 24 hours — the stories the money will react to.
Iran and Hormuz: Traders Price a U.S. Invasion at 16%, Normal Strait Traffic at 19%
The Middle East backdrop, as the markets see it: Polymarket’s contract on the U.S. invading Iran before 2027 sits at 16% on $172K traded in 24 hours, with no change on the day and $750K of liquidity behind it. The companion question of whether Strait of Hormuz shipping returns to normal by December 31 trades at 19%, up (+3) points, on $120K. Both resolve Dec 31, 101 days out. Read together, traders see a strait still disrupted and only a modest chance of an American ground move.
These two contracts are the nearest gauges of how hot the wider conflict backdrop stays. We take the Hormuz question up in Futures below.
Xi Visit to the U.S. by Sept. 23 Priced at 99.3%
U.S.-China relations: Polymarket’s contract on Xi Jinping visiting the United States by September 23 trades at 99.3%, up (+7.2) points in 24 hours on $156K of volume. The market resolves Wednesday, two days out. A 7-point climb on a contract already in the high 90s says the last doubt about the trip is being priced out.
No market settles on what the two sides agree to during the visit. The Xi-visits-US-by-September-23 market at 99.3% is the only direct read.
Giants-Rams Monday Night Football: Rams 74% on Kalshi
The NFL’s Monday night game: the New York Giants and Los Angeles Rams meet today in Monday Night Football, and it is the most-traded game market on Kalshi by a wide margin: 3.66M contracts traded lifetime, 2.14M of them in the last 24 hours. Kalshi has Los Angeles at 74% and New York at 28%, up (+1) on the day. Spread and total contracts trade alongside the moneyline.
No sportsbook line matched in our slate, so Kalshi is the only read: a Rams cover of 6.5 points at 53%, a cover of 7.5 at 45%, and over 48.5 total points at 47%.
Democrats Priced at 92% to Control the House
U.S. midterm politics: Polymarket’s contract on Democrats controlling the House after the 2026 midterms trades at 92%, down (−1) point in 24 hours on $100K of volume and $562K of liquidity. It resolves Nov 2, 42 days out. At nine in ten, the market treats the chamber as close to settled six weeks before the vote.
Further out, the 2028 Democratic nomination market has Phil Murphy at 0.2% on $357K traded — the busiest politics contract on Polymarket by 24-hour volume this morning.
Higher Rates May Outlast Fed’s Latest Hike
U.S. interest rates: the Federal Reserve raised its benchmark rate a quarter point to 3.75%-4% on Wednesday, September 16, per CNBC, and lowered its 2026 unemployment outlook to 4.1%. The labor data since have not argued for relief: August payrolls rose 162,000 against a 53,000 consensus, initial jobless claims came in at 196,000 for the week ending Sept. 12, and Challenger counts the 2026 layoff pace as the slowest in four years. The next checkpoint is the October decision, which lands Oct 28.
After the hike to 3.75%-4%, Kalshi's October decision markets price another quarter-point hike at 55% and no change at 45%; Polymarket's mirror of the same decision has the quarter-point hike at 53% and no change at 44%.
After Colts-Chiefs: Chiefs 62% for the AFC West, Colts Up 18 in the AFC South
The NFL’s Sunday night game between Indianapolis and Kansas City (FOX Sports) drew the weekend’s heaviest whale action on Polymarket, and Kalshi’s division markets moved after it. Kansas City’s odds to win the AFC West rose 9 points to 62%. Indianapolis’s odds to win the AFC South jumped 18 to 32%, closing on Jacksonville at 43% and Houston at 38%. The game’s settlement had not posted in our data at pull time, so we report the futures, not the score.
Kalshi's NFL MVP market has Patrick Mahomes at 8%, up (+5) points on 193,581 contracts.
Bitcoin above $82,000 at noon ET today — 96.7% (+84.4)
Bitcoin’s price today: this Polymarket contract pays if Bitcoin is above $82,000 at noon ET. Phemex News reports Bitcoin briefly topped $82,000 after trading below $76,000 last week, with $433M flowing into US spot Bitcoin ETFs on Sept. 18. The higher rung, above $86,000 at noon, is priced at 18.6% (+19.1). Separately, the contract on Ethereum dipping to $2,250 by year-end fell to 36% (−12), so traders also marked a deeper crypto slump as less likely. Priced at 6:06am ET and settling at noon — a snapshot, not a verdict.
View market ↗NFL division races after Sunday: Bears to win the NFC North — 21% (−18); Vikings 36% (+17)
NFL division titles, which come with an automatic playoff spot: one Sunday redrew three races. Minnesota and Chicago met Sunday — the game drew a $264K Polymarket bet on the Bears at 66% — and Kalshi’s NFC North market repriced hard afterward. Chicago’s odds to win the NFC North fell 18 points to 21%, while Minnesota climbed 17 points to 36%. In the AFC North, Cincinnati jumped 19 points to 50% and Baltimore slid 11 to 42%. In the AFC South, Indianapolis rose 18 points to 32%. One September weekend just moved January.
View market ↗NFL MVP: Brock Purdy — 17% (+11); 49ers to win the NFC West 44% (+10)
NFL awards and division futures: San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy climbed 11 points to 17% to win the league’s Most Valuable Player award after Sunday’s game against Miami, and the 49ers’ odds to win the NFC West rose 10 points to 44%. Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes added 5 points to 8%. The 49ers’ Super Bowl contract, though, sits at 8%, unchanged. The market moved San Francisco up as a division favorite without moving it up as a champion.
View market ↗Hormuz back to normal by New Year’s? One in five, says the market.
A 3-point climb in a day, a neighboring market that still sees a one-in-six chance of a U.S. invasion, and a definition of “normal” we have not pinned down.
The Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf shipping lane whose disruption this contract exists to measure, has a Polymarket market asking whether traffic returns to normal by December 31. “Strait of Hormuz traffic returns to normal by December 31?” trades at 19% (+3) over 24 hours, on $120K traded and $436K of liquidity. It resolves Dec 31, 101 days out.
The neighboring markets do not point toward a quick fix. Polymarket prices a U.S. invasion of Iran before 2027 at 16%, unchanged over 24 hours on $172K traded and $750K of liquidity, on the same Dec 31 horizon. A market that sees a one-in-six chance of a ground war and a one-in-five chance of normal shipping is describing a standoff, not a thaw.
The day’s 3-point rise in the Hormuz contract came on modest turnover, $120K, against $436K resting in the book. That is enough to register a lean, not enough to call it conviction.
Our read: with 101 days left and nothing in the related markets suggesting the standoff is breaking, one in five looks generous rather than stingy. But the payout turns on what the contract counts as “normal,” and we have not verified what transit level clears that bar. Until we know that, we cannot say which side of 19% is the mistake.
Today’s markets deciding — a side, a price, a time. Trade idea means a documented edge; price to watch means a stated price would change our mind; watch means worth reading, no edge claimed. All markets open at send.
Baseball, tonight’s late game: Minnesota at San Francisco. The Twins edged up to 53% (+2 in 24 hours) while the Giants slipped to 49% (−2). It is a near coin flip, alongside Toronto–Baltimore (Orioles 51%, Blue Jays 49%) on tonight’s three-game slate.
Baseball, Washington at Detroit: the clearest favorite among tonight’s three games. Detroit is 59% and Washington 42%, a 17-point gap that has barely moved (Detroit (−1) in 24 hours). 29,000 contracts have traded, the fourth-busiest game on Kalshi.
Weather, today’s high temperature in Austin, Texas: the National Weather Service forecasts 98° at Camp Mabry. The 97–98° bracket, which includes that forecast, was priced at 22% at 6:06am ET. Settles tomorrow.
The biggest individual trades of the last 24 hours — who put money down, how much, and how it went.
Sunday night’s NFL game between the Indianapolis Colts and Kansas City Chiefs drew two big bettors on two different contracts. Tiger200 put $423K on the Colts against a 6.5-point spread at 54%, which pays if Indianapolis won or lost by six or fewer. surfandturf put $229K on the Chiefs simply to win at 71%, then another $120K at 61% late in the evening. Settlement had not posted in our data at pull time, so we do not yet know how either landed.
A half-point Fed cut in October is priced at 0.3%. The market’s other answer is a hike.
$208K traded in a day on the Fed doing the opposite of what it did five days ago.
The Federal Reserve sets US interest rates, and its next decision lands October 28. Polymarket has a contract for every direction it could go, and one of them is a half-point cut, priced at 0.3% with $208K traded on it in 24 hours. The other contracts show where the real argument lives: a quarter-point hike at 53%, no change at 44%. Kalshi’s version of the same question agrees, with a hike at 55%, a hold at 45%, and a quarter-point cut at 1%. A hike contract and a no-change contract are separate bets; together they say the debate is between tightening and standing still. A 50-point cut is an answer to a question nobody at the Fed is asking.
What would have to happen: CNBC reported on September 16 that the Fed raised rates a quarter point to 3.75%–4%, so this contract pays only if the next meeting reverses that twice over, 50 basis points or more, within 37 days. The pressure runs the other way: on both venues the hike contract, not the cut, is the favorite for October. The latest data do not argue for a rescue either: August payrolls rose 162,000 and initial jobless claims sit at 196,000. Our read: an about-face this size needs a shock that has not happened. $208K changed hands on a contract almost nobody expects to pay. At 0.3% this is entertainment, not information, and a winning share pays $1 only if the world breaks first. ↗
